What happens when you convert JPG to PNG?
Converting JPG to PNG re-encodes a compressed photo into a lossless format. PNG keeps every pixel of the current image without adding more compression, and it supports transparency — which is why apps, design tools, and many upload forms ask for PNG. One thing to know up front: converting does not restore detail that JPG compression already removed. It locks in the image as it looks now, in a format that will not lose any more quality.
Because PNG stores the image losslessly, the file is usually larger than the original JPG. For example, a 700 KB JPG photo may become a 2–3 MB PNG. That trade is worth it when you need a lossless master to edit, a transparent canvas to work on, or simply the PNG format a tool requires.
