What are GST, HST, PST, and QST?
In Canada, sales tax depends on the province or territory where the transaction takes place. The federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) is 5% across the country. In many provinces, this is combined with a provincial tax into a single Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). Other provinces charge a separate Provincial Sales Tax (PST) or Quebec Sales Tax (QST) alongside the GST.
The standard tax calculations are straightforward, but vary by location:
For example, if you sell a $1,000 service in Ontario, you charge 13% HST, bringing the total to $1,130. In British Columbia, you charge 5% GST and 7% PST, meaning the same $1,000 service gets $50 in GST and $70 in PST, totaling $1,120. In Alberta, which has no provincial sales tax, you only charge the 5% GST.
Rates are based on current federal and provincial sales tax rules, including Nova Scotia’s 14% HST rate.
When you are paying for an expense, you often need to do the reverse — extracting the tax from a final receipt to know how much to claim as an input tax credit (ITC). If a receipt in Ontario totals $1,130, dividing it by 1.13 reveals the $1,000 base price and the $130 in HST paid.
